Marchisio Wins a "Binda-less" Giro Victory
Defending Giro champion Alfredo Binda was so dominate in 1929 and 1930 Giro d'Italia organizers feared the race was losing popularity. Binda was so powerful he was paid 22,500 lira (an amount equal to the winner’s prize) not to complete in 1930.
With no clear favorite Luigi Marchisio won Stages 3 in Messina and Stage 4 in Catanzaro to take a 4 minute plus lead on second place in the General Classification.
Marchisio's main contender Luigi Giacobbe (Ita) gained back 4'03" on hilly finish of Stage 6 into Salerno. The race leader's time gap was cut to 33 second with 9 stages to go..
Marchisio than proceeded to systematically control all his closest competitors through the mountain stages. He and Giacobbe matched each other "pedal stroke for pedal stroke", neither one breaking the other.
A very young Luigi Marchisio (21 years 1 month and 13 days old) rode into Milan with a 52 second lead to claim the 1930 Giro d'Italia victory.
